Meet at the old Kmart parking lot in Kahului (424 Dairy Road, Kahului, HI 96732) at 8:45am. Ride begins at 9:00 a.m.
Intermediate ride, 10 to 12 mph average speed.
12 miles total roundtrip: 6 miles to Paia on Hana Hwy and 6 miles return. Google maps: https://goo.gl/maps/f6DmF693SZYsVAiC6
After the ride, all are welcome to join us at Down to Earth Hawaii for brunch/lunch (non-host).
MBL will provide each bike rider with a pool noodle to attach and extend out 3β to the left of each bike. The noodle will be colorful, flexible, and marked with β3-Foot Lawβ.
We will travel on a higher traffic road, Hana Hwy, which offers a wide shoulder for bicycling so we can keep our distance from traffic. The intent is to remind vehicle drivers that there is a new 3-Foot Law in Hawaii (as well as 36 other states) to keep at least a three foot distance from cylists at all times in order to make the roads safer for all.
We hope this ride will communicate the importance of giving cyclists space, a rule not all drivers are aware of. Our additional messages are to remind both drivers and cyclists to respect the rules of the road and to respect each other. The noodle will provide an excellent visual message for drivers and a photo visual for the news. Please join us for this fun and very important opportunity.
