MEET OUR LEADERSHIP TEAM

Maui Bicycling League grew out of a group of people who love bicycling and wanted to see improved options for cyclists and pedestrians in Maui County. This dedicated group of volunteers began meeting in 2015. The group joined forces with Hawaii Bicycling League and organized a Maui chapter, Maui Bicycling League.
Working together with our members, our team drives forward initiatives to help make Maui a safer, better, more fun place for bicycling.

Let’s introduce them:

Saman Dias – Chair
As the founder of a multimillion dollar global computer training company based in San Francisco Bay Area, co-founder of a venture-funded e-business and advisor to numerous woman-founded startups, Saman semi-retired in 2014. Saman is known by her peers as a fearless leader with a passion for leading organization change for the better. Saman joined forces with Lee Chamberlain to make a difference on the island of Maui and launched RideSmart Maui Electric Bikes, a socially responsible venture. Saman was born and raised in Sri Lanka and rode bicycles as an alternative method of transportation. After launching RideSmart Maui, Saman found how unsafe it is to ride a bicycle on Maui. Inspired by the story of Karl Hagan, a local cyclist who was killed in a bicycle accident in Kihei, Saman joined forces with Lee Chamberlain to lead the formation of Maui Bicycling League.

Sandra McGuinness – Co-Chair
Sandra McGuinness was coordinator of the Maui County Nutrition & Physical Activity Coalition (HEAL) which focuses on policy, systems and environmental improvements that enable residents and visitors to enjoy healthier lifestyles. Safe bike paths and greenways are an important part of a well-designed community which enable people to be more active and active people are healthier people! Sandra grew up in San Francisco and her mode of transportation during her childhood was the bicycle. It was not uncommon for her and her cousin to ride their bikes four miles from their homes near the Golden Gate Park to Playland at the Beach. They also rode their bikes to shop in the neighboring areas, and to visit friends.

Anne Rillero, Secretary
An avid writer and marketing/public relations professional, Anne was the Communication Director at Pacific Whale Foundation for 20 years and the Creative Director at Evergreen Advertising for 7 years, with clients including Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida, The Disney Company and Purina. Some of her happiest memories are of riding the many miles of bike paths and country roads around Burlington, Vermont, pulling her young son on a trail-a-bike. Her son grew up to be a collegiate triathlete who routinely leaves her in the dust on their rides. Anne loves bicycling on Maui’s quieter roads and bike paths. She serves on the board of Maui Masters Swim Club and has helped with publicity for Cycle to the Sun and other community events.

Frank De Rego, Treasurer
Born and raised on Maui, Frank has over 30 years of experience in education and the non-profit sector. He is currently Director of Business Development Projects for Maui Economic Development Board, Inc. At MEDB, Frank promotes sustainable economic development and provides leadership on issues surrounding energy and water. Frank is currently serving on the program committee for the 2015 Maui Energy Conference. Prior to joining MEDB, Frank developed curriculum, trained and coordinated graduate engineering teaching assistants, and, for a time, was national coordinator at Purdue University for a program called Engineering Projects in Community Service. Frank’s strong belief in the health and welfare of the local community has motivated him to serve on various boards and commissions, including the County Charter Commission, the Wastewater Community Working Group, and three years as Chair of the County Cost of Government Commission. He is an avid pedestrian and believes that our community must provide infrastructure that supports all forms of transit, whether walking, driving, bicycling, or taking public transportation.

David Kingdon
David Kingdon began getting serious about biking when he named a maroon job with a wire basket “Burvy” at about age ten. It’s amazing that did not earn him an immediate and debilitating beat-down by the neighborhood kids. Subsequent adventures have included biking across the southern U.S. from California to Florida, most of the eastern seaboard, a good chunk of New Zealand’s South Island, and across Costa Rica by mountain bike. His most risky two-wheeled endeavor, however, was living sans-car in Honolulu for three years, blissfully bike commuting pretty much everywhere while friends and colleagues considered committing him to the Kekela psychiatric unit. Working and living in Maui for about the last decade, David is enthusiastic about doing his part to make Maui a safer and more fun place to bike, walk, and run. Not afraid of irony, Dave bike commutes on the currently dubious Maui highways and byways to his paramedic job, and he also has a background in injury prevention.

Kawika Plummer
Kawika has lived in Hawaii since 1997. He is a retired military veteran with 26 years of honorable service and during this service was stationed in Europe where he directly experienced what a great cycling friendly infrastructure looks like. Kawika also volunteers with Friends of Haleakala to help Haleakala park in cleaning up invasive species, fixing cabins and other tasks that sometimes require hiking into Haleakala Crater for 3 days at a time. He is an avid road bike cyclist including the yearly Century rides, Metric Century rides, riding up to the top of Haleakala and racing in the first annual Maui Grand Fondo in 2012. Kawika normally rides an average of 320 miles a week all over Maui and can easily see where better infrastructure is needed all over the island by recording HQ video on areas needed to help make Maui a better and safer place for cyclists/pedestrians.

Lee Chamberlain
A former Army Aviator, Department of Justice Special Agent/pilot, businessman, and outdoor recreation enthusiast, Lee formed the socially responsible, eco-friendly business venture RideSmart Maui Electric Bikes. Following the establishment of RideSmart Maui, Lee found that although Maui is one of the best places to ride bicycles, Maui is not safe and friendly for bike riders. He began a campaign for change to form Maui Bicycle League together with his partner Saman Dias. Together they have become members of the growing percentages of people that want to change the common notion of transportation and mobility. We want livable communities where we can commute to work, socialize and recreate by foot and bicycle.

Ray Glauser
Ray has been involved with bicycle advocacy on Maui for the last 25 years starting with serving on Mayor Lingle’s Bicycle Advisory Committee. Recently, he was the interim communications coordinator for the Maui Bicycle Alliance. He is an avid road and mountain biker and commutes to work at least one day a week. His history of bicycling includes racing (road, mountain, and triathlon) and traveling by bicycle in the United States and New Zealand. Ray is an Optometrist at Kaiser Permanente and is also involved in outrigger paddling and sailing.
